For subsurface sampling, we employ a trailer mounted Giddings Soil exploration
device. This coring machine takes 2.5 inch diameter cores and can penetrate
up to 40 feet into the ground. A six inch diameter core and a ten inch
auger are also available. The machine provides a relatively low impact
method of quickly examining the subsurface of a particular locale. By conducting
coring transects, we can develop a stratigraphic cross-section that helps
elucidate the subsurface.
